The 2020 Presidential Election was decided in Pennsylvania — in overtime. We are proud to have affected a wide range of efforts throughout the state to help secure a win for democracy.
During the Summer of 2020, in consultation with key political strategists, our team identified Pennsylvania as the most important swing state in the election and, because of Covid, understood that making sure its cities had sufficient poll workers was going to be critical. We developed a relational outreach approach that we call the Civic Connector model. Over Labor Day weekend, a “pop-up” team of 20 volunteers began those outreach efforts, focusing on poll worker recruitment in Philadelphia. Ultimately, our team grew to over 500 volunteers, and our focus expanded to several dozen projects across the state and beyond.
Some of the results we delivered in Pennsylvania:
-
• Recruited 2,400+ poll workers for Philly and Pittsburgh in under eight weeks, providing enough applicants to fulfill 20% of Philadelphia’s poll worker needs.
-
• Designed and distributed our Voting Essentials Guide and COVID Election Safety Guide to hundreds of community groups and, through them, to the public.
-
• Managed training, deployment, and scheduling for election protection volunteers, ballot canvassing observers, backup poll workers, and other essential players throughout the state.
-
• Raised money for key grassroots groups who turned out critical segments of the electorate.
-
• Expanded a State Senator’s live voter registration operation five-fold, through project management, event planning, supply, scheduling, and training.
-
• Created and filmed FAQs for Philadelphia Poll Workers, which provided invaluable supplemental training to poll workers.
-
• Managed a distribution network of supplies and food to Philly polling places on Election Day.
-
• Event-managed ballot-chase GOTV block parties in key counties in southwestern PA.
-
• Created social media for the Philadelphia Eagles: You can’t win if you don’t play!
-
• Recruited 100+ election protection workers and volunteers.
-
• Provided information and registration forms to help nursing homes and senior facilities support their residents with voting during Covid.
-
• Introduced “vote tripling” to the Working Families Party, SEEMAAC, Better Civics, West Southwest Votes, Feed the Polls, State Representatives, and more.
-
• Distributed important Election Day voter information to 1000+ voters directly and to more through our partners on the ground.
-
• On Election Day, provided both virtual “boiler room” support for last-minute standby poll worker and election protection staffing needs and live local support for polling place needs across multiple counties.
-
• Post-Election Day, organized and contacted hundreds of voters potentially disenfranchised by post-election litigation in a matter of hours, collecting relevant details for litigation support.
-
• Directed hundreds of volunteers to selected phone banking, text banking, ballot chasing, ballot curing, and post-election disenfranchisement efforts, reaching thousands and thousands of voters in PA and other key states.
